World-famous—the little lake in the Black Forest
Titisee & Hochfirst
Lake Titisee has been one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations for decades. Visitors from near and far come here to see the lake, browse the many souvenir shops, and be part of the colorful hustle and bustle on Seestraße.
Lake Titisee covers an area of 1.3 km² and has an average depth of 20 m. The lake was once formed by the Feldberg glacier and is now fed by the Seebach stream. There are various theories about the origin of the name Titisee. One theory is that "Teti" means "child" in the Alemannic dialect, implying that children spring from the lake – just as the stork brings children elsewhere. This interpretation is not far-fetched, as legends about children coming from lakes were widespread in Central Europe at that time.
Lake Titisee is perfect for a boat trip – either by pedal boat or, for a little more comfort, by motorboat. Excursion boats also offer lake tours (lasting approx. 25 minutes) where you can enjoy the atmosphere to the full. There is also a lido right by the lake with a large sunbathing lawn, playground, heated swimming pool, and access to the lake. If you want to get some exercise before the obligatory slice of Black Forest cake, you can walk or cycle around the lake on the lakeside path.
The Pferdestall restaurant on the edge of the pedestrian zone is the start and end point of the Zäpfle Railway, which takes you on an approximately one-hour journey through the picturesque Black Forest landscape. A truly wonderful outing for the whole family.
The nearby Hochfirst, Titisee Neustadt's local mountain, offers an indescribably beautiful view of Lake Titisee. You can drive directly up the mountain via Neustadt and enjoy an impressive view after just a few steps. The Hochfirst is also a popular launch site for paragliders – exciting to watch.
And while you're there, it's worth taking a detour to the Hochfirstschanze ski jump of the same name in Titisee-Neustadt. Germany's largest natural ski jump is the venue for a wide variety of sporting events in winter and is also an impressive experience in summer. Daredevils can roll down the jump in a balloon during the summer months.
