Where does Valentine's Day come from?

There are various theories about the origin of Valentine's Day. One legend tells of Bishop Valentine, who, in the 3rd century AD, as Bishop Valentine of Terni, is said to have married Christian couples against the will of the emperor. These marriages are said to have lasted particularly long and been blessed with good fortune. The bishop is said to have presented flowers from his own garden at the ceremony.

On the emperor's orders, Bishop Valentine was beheaded on February 14, 269. Two hundred years later, the church established February 14 as a day of remembrance. This is how Valentine's Day came into being.

Valentine's Day customs of times past

In 18th-century England, it became customary for lovers to send Valentine's Day cards, flowers, and sweets to each other.

In France, unmarried people were chosen by lot to be “Valentine”, who then had to live together as fiancés for the entire following year.

In Rome, too, two unmarried people from the city were chosen by lot in earlier times, but they only walked through the city together on Valentine's Day. According to tradition, Cupid's arrow often struck the chosen ones.

Valentine's Day in Germany

Valentine's Day only became established in Germany after the end of World War II – partly due to US soldiers who brought this custom with them from America, and partly due to increasing social prosperity.

Today, lovers in Germany and Austria traditionally give flowers and sweets as gifts on Valentine's Day, but also perfume and jewelry. Nevertheless, according to surveys, around 60% of respondents would be happier with a shared activity than with material gifts. Statistics also show that men are more likely to give flowers or trips, while women tend to give shared dinners and personal items.
